SR 109 Will Be Closed July 7 to August 10

SR 109 Hoquiam to Ocean City – Remove Fish Barriers

WSDOT, 3/1/2024 - Project overview : This project will replace culverts under SR 109 in Grays Harbor County.

Timeline : Spring 2024 - Fall 2024

Funding : $53.1 million

Project hotline : 360-216-7370

What to expect : Starting 9 p.m. Sunday, July 7, SR 109 at milepost 6.9 will close around the clock between Kessler Lane and Rock View Lane. The roadway will be closed to all travelers for approximately 33 days.

After the first road closure is completed, SR 109 at milepost 4.4 will close around the clock for approximately 21 consecutive days. The highway will close to all traffic between Bay Ridge Lane and Valley Road.

See "maps and drawings" for each work zone location. Each closure location is labeled at site 5 and site 7.

During both closures, travelers will detour via US 101, Ocean Beach Road, Grass Creek Road, and Powell Road.

Depending on traffic, travelers can expect about 20-minutes to use the 12-mile detour route between Hoquiam and SR 109.

There are three other culvert sites under construction this summer. See "maps and drawings" for each location. WSDOT will announce the work at each location when they are scheduled. No closure will occur before the 4th of July.

Each closure will be staged so that access to residents and business are maintained.

Total road closures during summer months

There’s truly no good time for major roadwork on state highways. People rely on the highway for everything from moving freight to getting to their doctors’ appointments. Plus, this construction is done during summer travel and tourism season.

WSDOT is restricted to a short time during the summer. These kinds of projects have “in-water work windows,” which is the time of year that we’re allowed to do this type of work. This is due to environmental considerations.

WSDOT will use the ‘get in, get out’ approach. Crews will work around-the-clock to get the work done as quickly as possible.

During each closure, crews will dig up the entire highway. They'll remove the existing culvert. It will be replaced with a new structure that carries creeks under the highway. Crews then will rebuild the highway. Until all the work is completed, WSDOT will keep people moving with detour routes.
